A VR addict's view on Meta

The announcement of Facebook becoming meta has piqued my interest. I have since read and watched everything I can on it. This research got me a bit intrigued. I am now nervous, annoyed, and slightly excited.

I have been active in virtual worlds since 2008. I was even pretty addicted to them at one time. I feel this experience gives me a different perspective than most.

Metaverse isn't new!

This is annoying me. The metaverse and virtual worlds aren't new. I joined Second life in 2008. There is of course VRchat, Fortnite, as well as, many others. The way he presented meta came off like he was introducing something new. Most of what he talked about is already here in some form or another. The things that aren't are a ways off. Even by his admission.

Virtual reality can be extremely intense.

In VR you can be anything, do anything, and have anything you want. It is a place where anything is possible, and the only thing real is your emotions. This world can be very overwhelming to many people. I am not sure most people can handle it. I fear some people may lose themselves in such a place. I know I did.

Virtual Reality can be heaven and sometimes hell.

Having a world where you can be anything and do anything, sounds wonderful. But it is very easy to get caught up in it. It is also a breeding ground for drama. Also, not everyone is nice or has the best intentions. Trolls and catfishing in VR are on another level, altogether.

Corporations will destroy the spirit of it.

Social media didn't start out like it is today. It started as a place to connect and express yourself. But corporations took over. They turned a place of learning, connecting, and expressing yourself into a world about greed and popularity.

Reality will become like Free city from the free guy.

They eventually want to replace our phones with glasses. In some ways, this is a good thing. I feel it will make us more engaged with what is around us. But corporations will use this as a marketing platform. By using overlays, advertising will be everywhere. It will be like the movie Free guy. But instead of gaming items, it will be advertisements.

We will become more divided

It's been proven facebooks algorithm is being used to divide and enrage people. This tactic will make it to meta. It will be even worse. We may have friends from around the world. But be in cable to talk to our neighbors.

Zuckerberg is not the one to do this.

I don't trust Zuckerberg, to make a metaverse with humanity in mind. I feel it will be about corporations and controlling the masses. Another thing, I don't like his products. When social media first came out, I didn't like Facebook. I thought it was boring and I only used it to play Oregon Trail. But everyone else seemed to prefer it, so I stayed. I imagine his version of Vr to be very cookie-cutter and homogenized.

Overall it could be great thing. But we need to be the ones that demand it's great. We need it to prioritize learning, connecting and creativity, over greed and popularity.
